Ayr is a popular holiday resort as well as being a shopping/market centre. It is a very old town; there was a settlement here long before a Scottish King named William the Lion gave it a charter and protected it with a castle in 1200. Nothing is left of the castle, but there are still plenty to see.
The name reveals that the racecourse was once at this side of town. The current facility is Scotland's premier horse racing venue, and plays host to the Scottish Grand National in April and the Scottish Gold Cup in September. The hotel is conveniently located for over 30 fine golf courses including Old Prestwick, which initiated the first ever Open in 1860, and Royal Troon and Turnberry - both of which still host golf's premier Championship every few years. Indeed, the Championship was at Royal Troon in July 2004, and will be held in Turnberry in July 2009.
