Nestling on the banks of beautiful Lake Windermere, the small Victorian town of Bowness is the tourist capital of the English Lake District. In the heart of this attractive town, the hotel’s great location makes it a superb base for visiting the many attractions across the whole of Cumbria, or for exploring the great walks and spectacular natural beauty of the Lake District.
The hotel was originally built in 1851 as a private gentleman's residence; it first became a guest house in 1973. The current owners acquired the house in the winter of 2003 and immediately set about a quarter-of-a-million-pound refurbishment. Today, Lonsdale House offers comfortable, attractive and beautifully appointed accommodation, as well as a guest lounge and a well-stocked bar.
The hotel’s lounge is situated on the lower ground floor and guests are free to use the lounge at any time during their stay. Snacks and beverages can be provided upon request at any time. The lounge also offers a complimentary library of fiction and a number of board games for guests’ use during their stay.
The bar can also be found on the hotel’s lower ground floor. The bar offers a range of draught and bottled beers, a wide selection of spirits and a selection of soft drinks. The hotel makes every effort to ensure that the bar prices are lower than those of any of the local public houses.
Directions.
By Car (from the M6 motorway):
- Leave the M6 at junction 36 and follow the A590, which then becomes the A591 to Windermere.
- After approximately 16 miles (26 km), turn left into Windermere village, following the signs for Bowness and the lake.
- Carry on through the village for approximately one mile (1.6 km), upon entering Bowness, you will find Lonsdale House on the right-hand side.
Parking:
The car park can be accessed by turning right into Bank Road, 20 metres past the hotel.
By Train:
A collection service from Windermere train station is available by arrangement.
